Welcome to the summer, readers, that time when you said you were going to do all the stuff you didn’t have time to do during the academic year. Also known, if you’re like me, as the time when you definitely don’t do any of those things.

But school’s not out just yet. At a UNC Board of Governors committee meeting yesterday, UNC System President Peter Hans made a huge announcement: The system is “exploring the idea” of creating a new accrediting agency with several other “major” public university systems. Hans did not specify which systems were in talks, saying he will have more details soon.

The announcement comes a few weeks after President Donald Trump signed an executive order to make it easier for states and institutions to switch accreditors. Hans said the system has an opportunity to “help restore” accreditation to its “original, focused” mission of ensuring colleges provide a quality education.
