Immigration Agents in Cary and Wake County

Assembly Network newsrooms are reporting on border patrol agents in the Triangle. Some of their work: 

Chilling effect at schools: “Wake County Public School System (WCPSS) spokesperson Lisa Luten told INDY in an email that there was no immigration activity or arrests on any school campus reported on Tuesday. But 19,000 students or about 10% of the student population was absent—that’s about 7,000 more absences than a normal school day. (WCPSS is the state’s biggest district with more than 161,000 students.)

Across the county’s Title I schools—where Hispanic students are overrepresented compared to the district at-large—the absence rate was about 18%, according to INDY’s analysis of data provided by Luten.” [INDY]

Confirmed in Cary: Siembra NC confirmed detention of workers at one construction site and more in Raleigh, INDY reported. Protests took place in Downtown Raleigh Tuesday night and Cary on Wednesday afternoon.

Even immigration lawyers are struggling to help clients detained by Border Patrol in North Carolina, and it’s still unclear where people are being taken. 

“[Lawyers] emphasized that even legal immigrants’ knowledge of their rights and the law is no guarantee that officers will respect them. Release without criminal charges from an ICE facility can take weeks or even months, irreparably damaging people’s lives.” Read more from The Assembly.

Popular Apex Brewery Expands

Southern Peak Brewery opened its second location this month in Sweetwater Town Center, a new 45-acre mixed-use development. The original location, founded in 2016, is just outside Downtown Apex. 

Southern Peak Brewery Taproom and Pizzeria is just as much a pizza joint as a taproom. Southern Peak founders Ken Michalski and Nathan Poissant added co-owner and pizzeria-focused partner Anthony Masino with the expansion.

🍕 Order up: Snacks, calzones, and pizza pies are on the offering, including some with Southern Peak beer ingredients like a Porter beersalmic glaze, Amber caramelized onion, and Wheat Ale hot honey. Pies come in small for one person or large for 2-3. 

  • Pro tip: Our order of three small pizzas suited our family of four with two young children. 
  • Try the beer pairing recommendations. 
  • Gluten-free crust is available for small pizzas for an additional cost. 

🍻 The atmosphere: Our Sunday evening visit found the taproom and pizzeria comfortably full, with NFL games on different TVs. Fewer people were outside on the patio after sunset on a chilly night. 

📍Find it: Sweetwater Town Center, 1481 Richardson Road, Apex, aspires to be a walkable gathering place with a central lawn and programmed events. The grand opening for the development was the first weekend of November. 

By their own definition, Sweetwater differs from Fenton in Cary by focusing less on “corporate office space and high end retail” and more on residential and “daily life essentials,” such as fitness studios, nail salons, restaurants, groceries, healthcare offices, and other shops. 

Other new dining options in Sweetwater include:

  • Kaara, a modern Indian restaurant with a menu that includes vegetarian and non-vegetarian tandoori dishes, Indo-Chinese dishes, biryanis, curries, dosas, and more. 
  • Fratelli’s Delicatessen, a family-owned deli and restaurant with breakfast, sandwiches, hot dogs, and a deli counter. 
  • Mi Cancun, a new outpost of the popular Mexican restaurant group in N.C. 
  • Mama Bird’s, a French-style ice cream shop expanded from nearby Holly Springs.
